Twenty-three wines have been selected as this year’s Sauvignon Blanc de Loire Project Ambassadors. The wines, all from the 2009 vintage, were chosen by a panel of four UK wine professionals, led by Sam Harrop MW. The all-female jury comprised journalists Sarah Jane Evans MW and Sarah Ahmed, and buyers Christine Parkinson from Hakkasan and Cat Lomax from Direct Wines.

2009 is shaping up to be an unrivalled year for Nyetimber, Britain’s leading sparkling wine producer. The 2009 Decanter World Wine Awards attracted more entries this year than any other wine competition in the world, cementing its position as the world’s biggest wine competition. In total 10,285 wines were entered, more than double the amount when the competition launched six years ago. The number of companies submitting wines increased by 23% to 2,240. This phenomenal growth is due to Decanter’s reputation for using only the very best judges, coupled with its unparalleled global reach for the results.

First Gold in International Competition for English Still White Wine
The English & Welsh wine industry’s rightful place on the world stage was confirmed on 12th May when the results of three major international wine competitions were released.
In all, over 100 awards were gained by English and Welsh wines in the International Wine Challenge, Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, giving a record number of medals and commendations for the UK.

Setting up a cellar
We use ‘cellar’ to mean both the area in which we store wines and the wines stored there. ‘Cellar’ may be a bit of an exaggeration for the place where most people store their wine. But it is worth considering the attributes of the cellar where wine is traditionally kept to reach the peak of its maturity. And even if you keep your wine in a cupboard under the stairs rather than in a cave under the ground, you can still imitate the most important features of the cellar. (more…)

Sooner or later, most serious winemakers conclude that it isn’t good enough to simply follow a recipe blindly. That’s a bit too much like painting-by-numbers. The expression of one’s own skill and artistry makes the difference between an ordinary wine and something uniquely personal. But to do that, it’s necessary to understand a bit about the composition of the wine.

English Wine Producers are looking forward to another busy year of activity in 2009, which include their trade tasting, English Wine Week, and putting a focus on wine tourism. The St George’s Day Tasting will take place on Thursday 23rd April at Chelsea Football Club, with key producers showing their latest releases and commercially available wines alongside quality smaller volume producers from the regions to illustrate the range and diversity now available. The tasting will also introduce some vineyards and wines new to the English wine scene.

Jacob’s Creek has been voted ‘Top Wine under £10’ at the 5th Annual Good Housekeeping Food Awards this week. The event, held at the Good Housekeeping Institute, saw Jacob’s Creek triumph over runner-up wine E&J Gallo. Good Housekeeping readers nominated Jacob’s Creek from a shortlist of 11, establishing Jacob’s Creek to be the readers true favourite. The magazine’s 1.7m readers voted via the magazine and the website.

Sovio Wines, a small wine company that makes a lighter style wine with 40% less alcohol than most mainstream wines, was recently granted permission to go to the High Court next month to challenge Food Standard Agency rulings that banned Sovio’s sale in 2007. This is despite Government policy which has been urging more sensible drinking for some time and the ever increasing level of wine alcohols which has been heavily criticized in the industry.

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) belonged to Viña Errazuriz this year as the 138-year-old Chilean wine producer walked off with two of the top Chilean Trophies, collecting the prestigious IWSC Trophy for Chilean Wine Producer, as well as receiving the IWSC Trophy for Carmenère.
