The English coast is awash with holidaymakers in July and August yet a lack of clarity on where people can walk often muddies the waters. Upper Coquet Valley – Flowering Now!
The ancient haymeadows of Northumberland National Park are in glorious full bloom now. Meadows with hundreds of flowers can be enjoyed in the Upper Coquet Valley, in the North Tyne Valley and at Greenlee Lough National Nature Reserve north of Hadrian’s Wall.
Upland hay meadows are internationally rare and Northumberland National Park has some of the best in Europe.

Boston – America’s walking city

The NSPCC is calling for would-be hikers across the country to get their walking boots on and sign up for the NSPCC’s HACK – ‘Hike Against Cruelty to Kids’ – a 25 mile hiking challenge through some of the most stunning countryside in the UK. Age Concern and Help the Aged are calling on everyone to ‘get walking’ the week of Monday 11th to Sunday 17th May, to give their support to the high profile national fundraising event, The Big Spring Walk and help generate vital funds for disadvantaged older people. The popular event will see people across the UK logging how far they walk that week, whether it involves pounding the pavements to get to work, swapping the school run for a leisurely stroll, or even totting-up miles on a treadmill at the gym!

“The coastal path around Britain is paved with gold”
As concerns about Britain’s fragile economy escalate, On January 22nd The House of Lords heard that the benefits to tourism from fully opening up the coast to the public are needed more than ever. The Marine and Coastal Access Bill, currently under discussion in The House of Lords, could see walkers giving an annual boost of up to £128 million pounds to coastal businesses, when the new all-England coastal trail becomes a reality2 .A report commissioned by the Ramblers into the economic and social value of coastal walking also found that over 11,300 jobs could be generated by better walking facilities on the coast.
