Dementia: a background
Some memory problems associated with ageing are more serious than others. People with substantial changes in their memory, personality, and behaviour may suffer from a form of brain disease called dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is one of many types of dementia. Globally it is one of the most disabling and burdensome health conditions because it seriously affects a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. In recent years, scientific studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids from fish may be of benefit. (more…)

2009 was a hugely positive year for tourism recovery in Kenya seeing a significant growth since the trouble encountered at the beginning of 2008. UK visitor figures are now over 80% recovered to the 2007 numbers, which reached 204,644 UK visitors, with the end of 2009 seeing 164,169 UK visitors. (more…)

A spectacular flower bulb mosaic of Russia’s St. Basil’s Cathedral will be the pinnacle of the ‘From Russia with Love’ theme at the Keukenhof this year. From 18 March - 16 May, the mosaic will portray an impression of the towers which frame the centuries’ old cathedral on Moscow’s Red Square. The mosaic cathedral measures 21 by 21 metres and has been created from almost 65,000 flower bulbs. Its colourful magnificence will be revealed at the Keukenhof this spring. (more…)

Age has been grabbing the headlines over the past few months, most recently with Harriet Harman bestowing a rather annoying new label on the cohort of healthy, active, older people, the “wellderly”. Last year it was the finding of the High Court, following years of wrangling which went all the way to the European Court of Justice and back, that the default retirement age in the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2009 was lawful. The Age Regulations allow employers to retire employees against their will at 65 as long as they follow the correct procedures. Whilst employers are not compelled to retire employees at this age, the law certainly makes it easier.
