Lloyd’s Community Programme approaches the end its 20th anniversary year with awards and success stories as it hosted the City Business Traineeship Awards in the famous Lloyd’s building last night.

The awards celebrate the City of London’s City Business Traineeship programme, an initiative supported by Lloyd’s Community Programme and the London market as well as other City businesses, which places A-Level leavers from surrounding City boroughs in paid summer work placements.

The Lloyd’s market welcomed 21 students across 15 companies working in financial services, business administration, legal and IT departments.

Illya Karpenkom, who was placed at Antares Underwriting, won Highly Commended Trainee of the Year award and his placement has been extended for a further six months.

“The work placement at Antares left me with no doubt as to my future career – I know I definitely want to become an underwriter. I am thrilled to be offered a further six months and can’t wait to get started.”

Gill Nicholls from Liberty Syndicate is Lloyd’s Community Programme’s longest serving volunteer and received the Project Champion of the Year Award.
Lord Levene, Lloyd’s Chairman, welcomed guests to the awards and said:

“Feedback from the Lloyd’s market has been very positive about the work that the students have done and I hope that this traineeship has given them a taste of a different world and opened up new horizons.

“Lloyd’s Community Programme does tremendous work that wouldn’t be possible without the commitment from its volunteers and I’m delighted to say that we have reached our target for this year of 1,000 helpers from the market.”

Lloyd’s Community Programme successfully reached its target of 1,000 volunteers after a year packed with activities and events.

Numerous events have been hosted in celebration of its 20 years. A Lloyd’s Games Day was held in June for over 500 students from Tower Hamlets schools as well as a Cricket Cup and Football Cup. Twenty one internships for local students were provided and, at a celebratory event in July, HRH the Prince of Wales congratulated Lloyd’s Community Programme for all its work.
