Beginning with the Carboniferous coal measures (300 million years old) of the plain from Whitehaven to Ennerdale, you gradually encounter the rising hills of Lakeland where the Skiddaw slates (440 million years) have been lifted by molten granite rising from the mantle below. By the end you will have seen carboniferous limestone, Permian new red sandstone (290 million years) and further coal measures at Tynemouth.
