Where to go

As well as the National Cycle Network, Sustrans promotes safe routes for schools, stations and residential areas in cities. Sustrans’ work relies on the donations and monthly standing orders of 40,000 supporters, and the support of charitable trusts, companies, the National Lottery and local authority programmes.

More than a third of the National Cycle Network is traffic free, so these routes are ideal, especially if you are a beginner. You can get details, maps and suggestions from Sustrans.

Locally there are often quiet country roads or even traffic-free paths. Often your local cycle shop will have details. You can also hire bikes while on holiday, where routes will be supplied. Often the paths are shared with walkers. The etiquette here is to give priority to pedestrians. Don’t ride too fast, and make sure you can stop in time. Allow plenty of room when passing another cyclist.
