His Royal Highness Prince Henrik Of Denmark exhibits at ’Sculpture by the Sea’ in Aarhus this summer

From 5-28th June 2009 a stretch of coastline one km south of the Danish city of Aarhus is being transformed into an open air sculpture park and one of the key pieces of this spectacular ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ exhibition has been created by HRH Prince Henrik, husband of HRH Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Both the Prince Consort and HRH The Queen are keen artists, with their works in various media having been exhibited across Scandinavia. For this exhibition Prince Henrik will be exhibiting his new two metre high bronze sculpture ‘Torso’.

This will be seen along with approximately 60 other sculptures, in various shapes, sizes and materials that have been created by an international group of artists, including the British sculptor Phillip King RA. The exhibition will be officially opened on the 5th June by their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary, the patrons of the exhibition, with a ceremony at 2 pm at Tangkrogen.

It has been inspired by the Australian ‘Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi’ which is now in its 12th year, but this is the first time that this major exhibition has been staged outside of Australia and forms part of the centenary celebration for the Aarhus National Exhibition. The exhibition is being produced in association with the City of Aarhus, the city’s iconic art museum ‘ARoS’ as well as with the advice and guidance of ‘Sculpture by the Sea’s’ Founding Director, David Handley and Axel Arnott, Head Curator, ‘Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus’.

Commenting on the news the Director of the ARoS Exhibition centre in Aarhus, Jens Erik Sorensen said “His Royal Highness has generously given the sculpture project in Denmark the opportunity to display his newly crafted bronze sculpture. On behalf of ‘Sculpture by the Sea’, the mayor of Aarhus, Nicolai Wammen has welcomed the appearance and the participation of His Royal Highness at the site”.
