Top tips and advice include:

• Commonly missed benefits
pay_less_cover_june09Don’t be one of the huge number of pensioners who are missing out on benefits – Age Concern estimates that almost £5billion in pensioner benefits remain unclaimed each year. Make sure you keep up to date with the benefits system. Even if you have savings or a large house, you should still check out your entitlements. Includes advice on Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Attendance Allowance.

• Saving with a stakeholder pension
You can now save as much as you like in any number and type of pensions and this includes Stakeholder Pensions. You can invest up to 100% of your earnings each year and get tax relief (maximum invested is £245,000 in 2009-2010). What tax relief means is that for every £80 you pay into your pension your fund grows by £100. Higher rate taxpayers can claim extra tax back.

• Retiring Abroad – Avoid NI shortfall
Many people who head overseas before the state retirement age unwittingly lose out. If you leave before making enough National Insurance Contributions you could miss out on the State Pension. Contact the Pension Service to see about making voluntary contributions to maintain your 100% entitlement to the State Pension.

• Cash for clutter
Unwanted possessions could be converted into cash, even if it’s only enough for a special treat. How to sell valuables – You can sell direct to market traders or, for a small deposit, set up a stall at an antiques market. You can sell valuable items at auction, although the profit is reduced by commission, insurance, handling fees and VAT.
