An appellation of quality
In 1894, to ensure the quality of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, the town’s wine growers set up the first ‘Syndicat Viticole’ or wine-growing syndicate aimed at providing buyers with wines produced directly from grapes grown on their land and guaranteeing the best vintages.
In 1911, the town council set up a commission of 34 wine growers to draw up a classification of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine. This legal action laid down strict regulations that governed the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Appellation and they are still in force today, guaranteeing the quality of all wines that bear the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
Today, Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wines are characterised by their rich colour and full body and are made from 13 controlled grape varieties which include Syrah, Grenache and Clairette.
