Walking: Go the ‘extra mile’ for older people this spring
April 3, 2009
Age Concern and Help the Aged are calling on everyone to ‘get walking’ the week of Monday 11th to Sunday 17th May, to give their support to the high profile national fundraising event, The Big Spring Walk and help generate vital funds for disadvantaged older people. The popular event will see people across the UK logging how far they walk that week, whether it involves pounding the pavements to get to work, swapping the school run for a leisurely stroll, or even totting-up miles on a treadmill at the gym!
Participants are encouraged to get sponsored for every mile they complete on foot, and it is hoped that together, supporters will walk the equivalent of the distance it would take to ‘walk round the world’ – to reach a total combined target of 25,000 miles! Alternatively, people can get involved by arranging their own walking event with friends and family, or attending one of the Age Concern and Help the Aged organised walks, including the flagship event which kicks off The Big Spring Walk in London’s Hyde Park on 10th May. With refreshments and entertainment at the London event – including a live samba band at the finishing line – there will be something for everyone!
Walking is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and The Big Spring Walk offers a great incentive to encourage people to put their ‘best foot forward’ while raising money for a good cause. All money raised from this year’s event will go towards funding the work of Age Concern and Help the Aged, including helping to combat poverty among disadvantaged older people.
