Theatre: National Theatre UPDATE

April 3, 2009

ENGLAND

ENGLAND by Tim Crouch receives its London premiere at the Whitechapel Gallery, in association with the National Theatre, running from 8 May – 16 June (press performances: 12 May at 7pm & 9pm). Performed by Tim Crouch and Hannah Ringham, the co-directors are Dan Smith and a smith [sic], with sound design by Dan Jones, technical management by Schrader-Umney and administrative production by Lisa Smith.

Performed by two guides within an exhibition, ENGLAND is a play about a sickness and the search for health at any cost. It is the story of a transplant – a heart inside another person’s body, a culture inside another country’s culture, theatre inside a gallery. It is an imagined tour through space and across borders: arriving at a place of urgency about the values we place on human life and art.

ENGLAND was commissioned by the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and premiered at the Fruitmarket Gallery in 2007 where it won a Fringe First, A Herald Angel and a Total Theatre Award. It is produced by news from nowhere, with Culturgest, Lisbon, and Warwick Arts Centre, UK.
