Health: Blood donation upper age limit removed as older donors stay healthier for longer
February 3, 2009
“The change to National Blood Service rules is a great example of how breaking down age barriers brings huge benefits, not only to older people, but society in general. We hope it will encourage other organisations to look carefully at their policies and ensure they don’t unnecessarily exclude people because of their age.”
NHS Blood and Transplant is also asking individuals of all ages to donate blood this Christmas season. Blood is often vital for those people undergoing treatment for cancer, for example, and may enable patients to go home for Christmas and enjoy time with their family and friends.
• There are currently 1.414 million registered blood donors.
• 5000 donors were due to retire next year.
• 10 per cent of donors are age 60 or above.
• 21,000 donors have donated upwards of 75 times.
• 6000 donors have donated upwards of 100 times.
