Gardening: Visit winning RHS towns, cities and villages
December 1, 2008
Following the announcement of the Britain in Bloom winners at the end of September, the RHS pulled together a list of the country’s top five locations to visit over the next year. Please see below for a selection of category winners. Full list of winners and awards are at the end of release.
Nottingham was crowned Champion of Champions 2008 in the RHS Britain in Bloom Awards, the largest horticultural campaign in Europe.
The 69 finalists were judged during the summer by RHS judges who travelled the length and breadth of the UK using every conceivable form of public transport available. Each entrant was judged on their floral displays, permanent landscaping, sustainable development, environmental initiatives, public awareness and community participation.
Top five Britain in bloom places to visit
1. Nottingham – Gold – Champion of Champions
There are so many things to do in the city of Nottingham and the surrounding Nottinghamshire County. The general cleanliness of the city and exquisite floral and residential areas gave the city the winning edge said the judges.
Autumn/winter
Visit one of Nottingham’s many parks – a new series of walks have been mapped out in four parks the Arboretum, Lenton Recreation Ground, Melbourne Park and Southglade Park – Nottingham has eight local nature reserves and judges were very impressed with Sellers Wood and Harrison’s plantation.
Spring/Summer
Visit the show piece – Nottingham Castle – or equally amazing Wollaton Hall – standing on a natural hill three miles west of Nottingham City Centre. Wollaton Hall is set in five hundred acres of spectacular gardens and parklands.
