Most Home insurance policies offer the option to cover your personal possessions when you take them outside of your home, whether you are just travelling locally or going on a holiday to distant shores.
This is typically called Personal Belongings cover away from Home. When you take out this option the possessions with you could be covered for Accidental Damage, Loss and Theft.
Typically your insurance company may set a total limit of cover of up to a certain value of money and as long as your total possessions with you don’t exceed this value and each item is worth no more than a stated single article limit you will be protected.
For items worth more than the single article limit, you may be able to specify the item on your contents policy and arrange individual cover however this could incur a further cost.
Choosing the personal belongings option may allow you to vary what you take away so on one visit along with the clothes you are wearing you could have luggage and a camera and on another a nice watch and a selection of jewellery.
Extra service…Some travel insurance companies charge an additional premium to cover your luggage and money when you go on holiday, or offer a discount if your luggage and money is covered separately. By adding Personal Belongings to your Home insurance you won’t need to include cover for your luggage and valuables on your Travel Insurance. Some home insurance policies can offer Personal Belongings cover that give up to £2000 for any single item and up to £5000 in any one incident, that’s up to £2500 more cover than you would get from a basic Travel Insurance policy*.
